A great bike for starting out.

Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good value, Good quality, Comfortable, Lightweight, Looks great
Having had only a mountain bike in the past, I wanted to get a road bike to use for commuting.
The Genesis Croix De Fer seemed like a good bike to start off with as I wasn't after anything to advanced.
I was excited to get on it, and took it out the same weekend it arrived, it was a delight to ride and it makes me want to take it only most weekends!
I live in a top floor flat, I was concerned about the weight as I'll have to take it up stairs, but I was impressed with how lightweight the bike was.
My only criticism was that it did not come with pedals, which I wasn't aware of. The salesman in store explained why and it was a valid reason.

Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Looks great
Cons: Heavy, hubs are cheap
I have the 2010 model, which was/is a very good bike, which I rode through the cobbles of the Paris Roubaix as well as the streets of London, but with some defects: the Shimano brakes were a mixed bag, felt numb, no modulation and the eyelids to fit a rack were unusable (see review on 2011). This new model has learnt from customers experience and fitted the excellent Avid BBR7 and modified the design of the eyelids to actually make them usable. Well done.
What do you get for your money?
A bike that does everything you want it to do and once you've grown out of it, it can be upgraded to a very good road bike as well. I have recently updated my Croix de Fer to run a Campagnolo groupset and built a set of light wheels to make it go faster!
Homework for Genesis:
The Deore hubs are terrible and should be the next upgrade for the 2013 Croix de Fer. Shimano XT should be the very minimum.
The off road tyres are a drag and not suitable to the majority of customers who use this bike as commuter, for touring or as a winter bike. It is not a cross bike, the cyclo cross folk want lighter bikes for racing, so why insisting with these, frankly unusable tyres? Fit a pair of Conti Gatorskin 25 or 28 mm and Happy Days!
I highlighted the weak points of the bike beacause customers will have to deal with them, but overall it is a very good riding experience, which can be improved to excellent at a relatively low cost

Thanks I agree with your points.

I agree no point in these tires. Would appreciate any suggestions on the rims - I have Alex rims. What do you think of these? I am no expert but they seem a bit tinny>
Do you have any suggestions for alternatives - I use the bike as a commuter and want to also use for touring later.
Thanks

Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Looks great
Cons: Heavy
A great looking bike in the flesh (subjective I know). It's no lightweight (around 25-26lb) and the std 35mm cyclocross tyres are a bit more draggy than road tyres, so it doesn't have that sprightly feel, particularly on initial acceleration. However once up to speed it feels fine and composed... and the springy steel frame absorbs the impacts from less than perfect roads, so makes you feel like you can just plough through the rough bits instead of bracing yourself for the rattling and shaking (not directly comparable to a mountain bike but generally the same can be said for offroad). The brakes are simply great, even the rear brake seems to drag the bike to a stop more than a rear brake should. The gears are slick and provide a useful range for most situations (ie commuting and recreational rides) but for touring hilly regions loaded up you might want to consider either sticking a 12-30T cassette on (which is the simplest solution) or a 12-32T with a change of derailleur. The standard seat (for me) is fine for commuting 5-10 miles but over that starts to get uncomfortable... so that's getting changed shortly. Overall a very nice versatile bike that makes you feel like you could go anywhere...that's what I wanted so that's why it gets 5 stars from me.

Update

A 11-32 10sp SRAM PG1050 cassette will fit without changing the rear derailleur. It's about at the limit but works fine.

Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Looks great
I bought this from an Evans Store, 12 months interest free finance was too good to pass up!
I've always ridden MTBs, just because I've always ridden off road and thought a bike was a bike, it worked on anything. Well my Specialized did work on the road, but I decided to take the plunge and splash out on this when my friend recommended it to me.
I picked it up and left the shop. After a few hundred yards I had to stop and calm down. This bike is incredible! It's fast, got a really nice gear ratio, solid brakes... and a very comfortable riding position.
Since I've bought it I've added the following to it;
• Pannier Rack
• Rear SKS Mudguard
• Crud Catcher (front SKS guard doesn't fit, not enough clearance under front fork with 700x35 tyres that come on it, and the position of the disc calliper... I'm not sure if the support bars will attach).
• 2 Bontranger bottle cages
• Lezyne Pressure Drive Pump
• Cateye wireless computer
• Cateye Lights
• Specialized micro saddle bag with puncture kit.
I feel like I could cycle round the world on this puppy now, cannot recommend it enough!!!
