Badly let down by hub gears

PostedOctober 18, 2012
No, I do not recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Looks great
Cons: 5 speed hub
I bought this bike when my daily commute dropped from 28 miles to around 10 as it's extremely practical - I can ride in a suit due to the fully encased chain, mudguards and coat guard.
I love the ride quality, the additional weight of the entire bike and flex of steel is extremely smooth over london's potted streets.
The brakes aren't too hot, but this is not a bike to rush on although, with its big wheels and decent top gear it is capable of a decent pace.
I love the look of it and the difference in convenience and comfort compared to a rigid aluminium frame is almost unbelievable.
However... the whole thing is badly let down by terrible, terrible hub gears. They haven't worked properly since I bought the bike (well over two years ago) despite the mechanism being replaced twice. I've read many other reviews talking about the poor 5 speed gears and it's a complete mystery to me why pashley insist on producing a bike that doesn't work properly.
My advice to anybody considering a pashley is to buy one but stick to the standard version with 3 speed hub that actually works properly!

Not suitable for hills

PostedMarch 29, 2012
Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Comfortable
Cons: Heavy, bad gears
I've had this bike for just over a year. I brought it to last as I do around 35 to 70 miles a week. On the plus side the ride is really good over bumpy ground, sadle is comfortable after 2 months, tyres really last. On the downside the weight of the bike makes it very hard to get up those hills from Oxford to Witney where I live. It's not as fast as I hoped with only 5 gears and the hub gears keep breaking down. I had them replaced in the bike shop once already. Now my third gear has completely gone and 1st gear does not work which does not help going up the hills.
I feel let down by the gears so Overall it is a good bike if they could just sort out the gears this would be a great bike.

Buy one for yourself!

Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good value, Good quality, Comfortable, Looks great, it's cool
Sure it's steel, heavy and simply black. But it's also comfortable, tall, practical and a classic. This bike is a must for any man even considering adding a “Dutch” style bike to their collection. I’ve got my Bianchi road bike for weekends and on the rollers, the Genesis for hitting the off-road trails and my Pashley for commuting back and forth to work, taking my daughter to drama and my son for a spin around the village. I use it to run errands and even take the dog for a walk. I know it’s crazy. There’s no fuss with changing into or out of “cycling” clothes as I ride it wearing whatever it is I’m wearing that day. Whether it is a suit and tie or dungarees and brogues it’s a perfect everyday bike.

Elegant Cycling

Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, Looks great
Cons: Heavy
Back to a traditional age when bikes were just ...well bikes! Not for racing, trailing or whatever but purely for just getting about on. Superb riding position enabling the rider to take in surroundings. No strong urges to 'step up' and race although can pootle along at some speed. Traditional in looks and lovely to ride..British too! Very happy with my purchase cycling to and from work in comfort, popping to ther shops at lunch etc and enjoying it too! Ideal for someone without serious sporting ambitions but enjoys a day out with a pack lunch or any other countless scenarios. Most enjoyable and highly recommended!

disappointing purchase

PostedJuly 14, 2010
Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Looks great
Cons: Poor quality, Heavy, Expensive, Uncomfortable
Compared to its price the quality of this bike was disappointing. Nice looking bike, but heavy with uncomfortable saddle, poor gears, and its a hard job to paddle it. My ones rubber handle kept coming off. I returned it back.

Don't Be a Sheep! Unless You Follow Me!

Yes, I recommend this product.

This is the Mutz Nutz, why get a mountain bike, road bike or hybrid like every one else when you can ride in luxury on some thing a little different?
I commute over 20 miles a day on my Pashley, it's a solid build and you can just "jump on and go" as it has a built in Dynamo, rear tail light and completely enclosed chain guard, it also has a rear wheel dutch style lock. It's worth backing up the Dynamo with a good flashing LED and a cable/D lock combo so you can loop & Secure the Saddle/frame & wheels when you lock it up.
The Hub brakes work well in the wet and dry, the Sturmey Archer 5 speed gears are really useable for hills & the straights a like and makes effortless cruising and suprisingly high speeds if you like with it's large wheels.
