Super fat and knobbly tyre

PostedJuly 15, 2013
Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, grip
Cons: rolling resistance
I was really struggling in the recent boggy and wet weather, finding that my front wheel was losing grip on slimy flint and wet roots, and losing traction up the hills. You know what we are all like - whilst I probably should be concentrating on my technique and weight balance I decided that it was my choice of tyres at fault.
So I decided I needed MTB tyres with more grip, and after loads of research plumped for a pair of Nobby Nic's. When they arrived I was amazed at just how wide they really were (2.4 vs my old 2.1 tyres), Well out on the road they really perform well, and have given me an extra bit of confidence when the going gets tricky. Having said all that the weather has turned really dry so I can't comment yet on how they will perform in the middle of a wet winter.
The downsides so far as I see them are
- the added rolling resistance (when compared to my old tyres) - you do turn around when the tyres hum on tarmac and look for the swarm of bees that must be following you, and
- the really small clearance to the frame and front forks. When cornering you can hear the outer "nobbules" rubbing against the frame and I get leaves trapped between front wheel and suspension on a regular basis.
