Warm but not at all waterproof

PostedMay 22, 2013
Yes, I recommend this product.
Cons: not waterproof
These fit well and are good quality. They are cosy warm for cold days but if your buying them for the rain you'll be disappointed. It was my first time riding with them in the rain today and I made it four kilometres before I felt the rain seeping in. By the time I got home from my hour commute it was like having a full bucket on each foot. I live in Sydney so warmth is not a major issue for me but the rain is, so for me they're quite disappointing.

Functional Quality Shoes

PostedDecember 22, 2012
Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, adjustable, secure
Cons: Unattractive
I chose these shoes after much consideration and having compared them to two others at home over the period of a few days. I’ve since been riding with them for about six weeks in the winter cold and rain.
Although not the prettiest of the lot, I chose the Shimanos over the others on the basis of construction quality, materials, fit and having three velcro straps for adjustability and snugness. The straps allow for a good range of tightness and feel very secure when done up and allow the shoes to be relatively quick to put on. The other factor was the sizing which works for me and was the widest of those I tried, allowing more space for thicker socks. They are also very well constructed and appear a really good quality shoe, plus they have a GoreTex membrane.
Out on the road, they have been much better for winter riding than my summer Italian shoes with overshoes, although do feel less light and more cumbersome but I suppose that’s the price to pay for warmer drier feet. They have certainly been warmer and more waterproof but I've still worn neoprene overshoes at temperatures around 2-6 degrees to keep my feet warm enough. Another reason for this is to hide the big white Shimano logo - as it doesn't match my Campagnolo equipped bike! I haven’t yet tried them in sub-zero temperatures so can't vouch for their performance in extreme winter conditions.
One small niggle is that I couldn’t get the cleats as forward enough on the sole as my summer shoes, so I had to file out the slots in my Speedplay adapter cleats.
I went one size up from my summer shoes and wear two pairs of thin socks inside them. At first they felt looser than I'd preferred but the extra space has allowed for more air insulation and they now feel fine.
In summary, these are very functional quality shoes and are warmer and more waterproof than summer shoes. The three Velcro straps are a big selling point for me, as is the width. They're quite clumpy and may still benefit from some extra insulation in really cold weather, so you may want to hide them under an overshoe if you're style aware or suffer from particularly cold feet.

go up a size

PostedOctober 2, 2012
Yes, I recommend this product.
These shoes are excellent at keeping your feet dry in the wettest of conditions, but you will need to go up a size from your usuual shoe size as they come up very neat

Fit for cycling around the world

PostedAugust 6, 2012
Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good quality, Comfortable, will take a battering!
I bought this shoe in 2009 and cycled 60,000km around the world with them. They survived two and a half years of being worn everyday in conditions varying from snow to deserts to monsoon rains, temperatures from -15 to +47 degrees centigrade.
Although, three years later, they are no longer waterproof, I cannot recommend these shoes strongly enough - incredibly hardwearing.
