Budget chain, not good for commuting

PostedMarch 18, 2012
No, I do not recommend this product.
Pros: not a bad wear rate for a cheap chain
Cons: not good with sram pg950 cassette
This chain was fitted to my Pinnacle Iroko One (Specifies KMC X9 chain in the bike spec). I use the bike for commuting to work and in the last 2 months I have covered 1000 miles. I measured the chain the other day for wear using a Park Tools CC-3.2 go/no-go gauge to find that the chain has stretched to 0.75% which drove me to replace the chain. I cleaned and re-oiled the chain each week, which worked out to be around every 100-150 miles. This life was ok, as it is somewhat of an entry level chain, however what annoyed me was the fact that somehow the SRAM PG950 cassette on my bike was also 'eaten up' in this time - not sure whats at fault here - chain stretch or the cassette either way a new chain and cassette every 1000 miles / 2 months will get pricey and kind of defeats the object of commuting by bike to save money. Likewise when it came to removing the chain, the quick-release link was extremely tough to disengage. In the meantime I have replaced it with a Wipperman 9SX chain, though I am yet to decide on what cassette to use next since the KMC X9 chain + SRAM PG950 cassette are not up to the 'arduous' job of commuting on road! Excuse my sarcasm.

Good quality chain for the price

PostedNovember 27, 2011
Yes, I recommend this product.
Pros: Good value, Good quality
Good quality chain which I purchased on the strength of other positive reviews and I have not been dissapointed. Missing link is handy as it makes it easy to remove the chain for thorough cleaning. Shifts are quiet and smooth. These chains have a fairly thick "grease type" lubricant applied to them during manufacture and it might be a good idea to wash it off with solvent before fitting and applying your favourite chain lube.
